    Thousands of Syrians protest outside their embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut in support of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

    The Lebanese army and police reinforced security measures around the embassy. The protesters waved Syrian flags as well as posters of Assad, and chanted slogans in his favour.

    Reem Haddad, a spokeswoman for the Syrian Information Ministry, spoke to Al Jazeera's Folly Bah Thibault, and confirmed that the government is to revoke the emergency law:

    A Syrian official source said on Sunday that 12 people were killed in clashes in the port city of Latakia over the last two days.
    "An official source said attacks by armed elements on the families and districts of Latakia over the last two days resulted in the martyrdom of 10 security forces and civilians and the killing of two of the armed elements," the official news agency SANA said.
    The source added that 200 people, most of whom were from the security forces, were wounded in the clashes.
      
    Rights activists said on Saturday at least six people had been killed in Latakia over two days.

    Syria's army has beefed up its presence in the southern city of Daraa, a focal point of bloody protests across the country, and soldiers took to the streets in a northern port where tensions are rising, residents said on Sunday.

    The protests, which started in Daraa eight days ago, pose the most serious challenge to the 48-year rule of the Baath Party, and its leader, President Bashar al-Assad.

    The Syrian government has confirmed to Al Jazeera that the country's emergency law is to be lifted.

    Syrian authorities have released Diana Jawabra, a Daraa activist, whose arrest this month helped fuel mass protests in her home city of Deraa against Baath party rule.

    One of Jawabra's lawyers told the Reuters news agency that Jawabra was among 16 people released on Sunday.

    They took part in a silent demonstration this month demanding the release of political prisoners and of 15 children arrested in Daraa for writing freedom slogans on school walls.

    Al Jazeera's Rula Amin said tensions remain high in Syria, as the people of Sanamin buried their dead.
    "People in Sanamin want to see the people who killed their sons held accountable," she said.

    Activists and eyewitnesses say Syrian army units have deployed in key areas of Latakia, a seaside Mediterranean city rocked by protests and unrest.

    They said that troops in army vehicles entered the city at night following a day of violence and chaos in which protesters and the government accused each other of violence and incitement. 

    They spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.

    The government on Saturday accused armed groups of attacking people in the religiously mixed resort city, adding at least two people were killed by rooftop snipers.

    The situation remains tense in Syria, where at least three people were reportedly killed by security forces in the city of Latakia.

    Tens of thousands of Syrians were out on the streets of Damascus in a show of support for President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday.

    Protesters are calling for reform. However, an adviser to the president said the protests are a plan to cause sectarian divisions.
